This pool of water is what D calls the "dambo". Many years ago, a ceramic pipe diverted the water which ran down from the hill behind our house under the lawn and into a burn. When we moved in, the underground pipe was blocked/broken/both of these and in winter the lawn was often waterlogged. So D dug a channel  around the lawn and dug out what has become a seasonal pond. Sometimes (rarely!) it dries out in the summer. In winter it's almost always full.

Beyond the dambo you can see the green tubes with the apple trees we planted last February see here for how wet it was then!!. Today we stuck bamboo canes in to mark the place where 8 new apple trees will go this year. D is going to dig one hole a day, starting today. It's hard work...Here is D digging the holes last year.
