Is he real?

He stood there motionless for so long I began to think he was just a straw stuffed manikin to connote a Mexican tone to the place.  But then he took a few steps to demonstrate his authenticity.  Was he trying to fix the door lock, or was he thinking about getting a tattoo, or what?
