Bastion Point

Wide Wednesday entry for the History theme. Bastion Point has played various roles in the history of Auckland. Currently parkland it contains the Malcom Joseph Savage memorial ( main pic and extra ). This commemorates the burial place of New Zealand's first Labour prime minister. In the 1970s it was the site of an occupation by Orakei Maori Action Committee who were protesting at plans to use the land for expensive housing. Thanks to Steveng for hosting.
