Teeny, Tiny Coconuts

I have no idea why this palm tree has produced these small pod things and two bunches of them to boot.  I was under the impression that palm trees produced coconuts, not these seed bombs.  
It makes me wonder about what other horticultural myths I may have accepted without question.
