Red eyed tree frog
A busy day. Up at 5am for an open boat trip through the flooded rainforest of Tortuguero. This is the time when the wildlife is most active and we saw 3 types of monkey, toucans, frigate birds, great green macaws and a stunning Jesus Christ lizard, so called because they can run on water (but alas seem quite unable to turn water into wine)
A quick breakfast and then out for another boat tour. This time we saw mexican porcupine sleeping in a tree, numerous iguanas and when we stopped the boat to look at a caiman we discovered a boa constrictor on the bank on the other side.
This afternoon e had booked to go kayaking through the forest with a guide and a couple from France. To say it was raining would be like describing Niagara falls as a bit of a trickle. It was torrential complete with thunder and lightening. So bad was it that the other couple gave up but hubby and I - being slightly masochistic- soldiered on to the end and in a bizarre kind of way enjoyed the experience. Saw a sloth which was a real bonus.
This evening we joined a group exploring the hotel gardens where there are red eyed tree frogs. They come out at night and so not easy to find. This is one that hubby and I found ourselves and kept quiet about to keep the hordes away. Pretty exhausted now and very damp but happy.
