With snow forecast we had considered leaving a day early (my husband's choice) or adding an extra night (my preferred option).

Instead we decided to travel as planned and it was one of the more challenging journeys we've had.

We did well to get across the high ground into Cumbria before the snow started. It got heavier as we travelled down the motorway and at Penrith we pulled into Rheged for a coffee and rest. Some of you will recognise this converted airstream caravan, now a catering van (in summer).

After a few snow checks from the entrance we decided to set off again and the journey was ok to the King's Head at Thirlmere from where we could see a long line of stationary traffic ahead. Another stop in the hotel car park to assess the situation ....... I'd prefer to be stuck in a pub rather than a traffic jam ....... and then on to join the queue which had started to move slowly.

At the top of the next rise a double decker service bus heading south had slid on an icy section and was stuck on the northbound lane. Once past there it was a slow journey home on slushy roads.

Wish I'd booked that extra night.
