And better than a football-related blip after another dismal result for Scotland. To be fair there was no disgrace losing in Belgium to a pretty decent side, but after the poor earlier results in the group only a completely unexpected victory was going to leave them with any chance at all of qualification. Instead they are bottom of the group. As I commented elsewhere, will I ever again see Scotland's men qualify for a major football tournament in my lifetime? Clearly I was spoiled growing up, with World Cup qualification in 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998, and Euros in 1992 and 1996. Little did I know that the first of those, when they were retrospectively ranked 9th, would be the highpoint of Scottish international football achievement.
Playing football was rather better tonight, although a bit more running about was needed as we ended up with five-a-side. In the end our team were comfortable winners, but it was close for quite a while.
