A Writer's Life

The plague of the second child

With your first child, you read the books, discuss sleep on countless chats, try to establish a routine, never, ever wake the baby when he naps, note how long he sleeps and feeds, and mark the days when he actually sleeps. With the second? You just wing it. I can’t tell you for sure how long he sleeps at night. How many times he wakes up. At what times he goes to bed. It’s starting to take shape, these days, and he did have a great night this week. But he’s a second child. His sleep is often interrupted by or for his brother: daycare runs, excited toddlers, etc.

But I know one thing: I’m less tired this time than I was with Olivier. Because I’m not expecting sleep. I’m not watching the clock. Stressing about it. He’ll sleep. One day, I’ll have issues getting him out of bed in the morning.
