Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus

I've been trying to capture a yellow shafted flicker in flight for over a week. I did manage to get a few focused ground shots of two flickers feeding on ants at Lenape, but the wing span shots were very grainy. I'm pleased with this one even though the female's head is somewhat blurred. Here's a snap from last week's wing shot.

It's a bright blue, cloudless, windy day. I'm still high from my birding weekend of exhilaration and the two tiny Cape May warblers that came to my feeder at 2pm last Friday just as I was searching for information on Cape May lodging. The birds high sweet song alerted me to something unusual - I hurriedly took pictures but they are ghostly blurry and my movement chased them off. No matter.
