A bird walk this morning in breezy conditions...I saw my first two glaucous gulls - two juveniles here from the arctic.  They are quite large, as you can see from the mallards behind this one.
Another first...the smell of fresh otter droppings, which I expected to be fishy and unpleasant, but are actually very pleasant - reminded me of 'sea air' candles or bubble bath, and someone else described as fragrant :) I'm sure Orkney Soap are missing a marketing opportunity here.
Oh, and another, my first sighting of white-fronted geese, winter visitors from Greenland. So, well worth bracing the wind for :)
