ALAUNA
In the second century AD, on the orders of the Emperor Hadrian, the Roman Army built a large fort on the top of the cliffs at Maryport ( Alauna ).
1000 soldiers were stationed here...
Hadrian's Wall goes across the top of England from Newcastle to Bowness on Solway...but the fortifications continued along the Solway coast to Maryport ( Alauna ) and down as far as Ravenglass. ( you may well have taken the little train from Ravenglass ( Laal Ratty ) up to Dalegarth in Eskdale ).
In the 'extra' you can see the view of Maryport harbour from the Roman fort...The fort is now Maryport Roman Museum, which we visited today. It has the largest collection, in a single site, of Roman altars in Britain...the collection was started in 1570 by John Senhouse. ( worth googleing! )
