Galle
Our last full day in Sri Lanka and we are in the lovely city of Galle. Many people lost their lives here in the 2004 tsunami and we have heard lots of tales of loss and of survival. The wave swept in over the cricket ground and into the newer part of the city, but miraculously didn't affect the historic old Fort area. All along the coast, buildings have been replaced but there is just the odd one still in ruins - a poignant reminder of the tragedy.
Before our farewell dinner, we had a lesson in cooking Sri Lankan style. Fortunately, we didn't have to cook our own dinner!!! Just as we were finishing, our driver called us outside as there was a parade going on. It takes place annually and so we were lucky to see it. A golden buddha was carried through the streets accompanied by dancers, fire eaters, stilt walkers and a LOT of noise! I'm going to miss this place!
