Cool and Collected

My Dear Fellows and Dear Princess,

The day started out with the sun streaming in. Again.

It was about 7am and I thought, "eff". Despite the new a/c, yesterday was pretty unbearable. Every time we moved out of the "cool zone" we felt ourselves wilting. I showered three times and it still wasn't enough. It was even worse for the little guys. They were like a pair of empty pyjama cases yesterday, just flopping about on the floor and trying to find cool corners.

This morning I put out icy water in all the cat bowls and Jasper knew what it was right away. He was up on the kitchen tops as soon as he heard the ice cracking. I really wanted to try and prevent the place heating up, so rushed around turning on all the fans and the a/c and closing all the blinds.

Er Indoors had stayed up until 4am last night watching tv shows about housewives pulling at each other's hair extensions, so I wanted it to be nice and cool when she eventually emerged. I think I did a good job and both cats and Er Indoors seemed reasonably fresh in the early afternoon.

Then it came. The downpour. It is BUCKETING out there. It is so violent that the cats leapt from their window seats and have found refuge next to us on the couch. All I can hear is the steady ssssshhhhh of raindrops hitting big flat green leaves and the occasional "peep" of birds hiding in nests. The earthy smells coming up from the gully are like the ground breathing a sigh of relief.

Consequently we've spent the day watching old movies and tv shows. It has been great. And Mary Tyler Moore was REALLY RUDE today. As usual, the perpetrator was Betty White:

SUE-ANN: Great news! I'm to be the face of a brand-new fried chicken franchise! Soon people will be able to look up and see Sue-Ann's big pink bucket on billboards across America!

Or is that just my guttersnipe mind? It is, isn't it? Or is it? Damn you, Betty White - she delivers these lines so sweetly I can never tell.

S.
