Sally Mair - Loving life

Workplaces

Taking a lead from Swannie, this was one of my first workplaces.
It's a view from Johnston Terrace of the back of Argyle House, on the corner of Lady Lawson Street and the West Port. It was the civil service head quarters in Edinburgh, built in the 1960s. I remember that when you went in the main entrance you could take the lift down almost as many floors as you could up,as it was built on an elevated corner site.
I had a holiday job here as a student. It was quite funny really.
I went to the unemployment office in Johnston Terrace to register as unemployed over the summer, as one did in those days! They sent me round the corner to Argyle House, complete with a slip of paper, for an interview and I ended up working in the staff canteen for the summer. Quite enjoyed it really, although I think my friend's father was a little less amused when he saw who served him his morning coffee! Those were the days.
