Cramond Island - Anti Shipping Barrier
The barrier and associated causeway were built in 1940 as part of the Scottish anti invasion works and to support the defences of Rosyth Naval Dockyard. Between each of the concrete piers additional concrete shuttering was inserted to strengthen the barrier. The island had a military garrison with searchlights, obsolete artillery and light weapons. Luckily these defenses were never tested in anger.
In 1946 the concrete blocks had an additional yard of height added ( the lighter material on top of each block) and the eye rings that are visible were connected by a steel hawser.
