La vida de Annie

By Annie

Cales coves.

A short visit to Cales Coves today, short because it's a bit of a slog down a track from where you have to leave the car, and also because Min and I were a bit unsteady today and I forgot my trekking pole which helps with climbing over rocks. There's a great view from the clifftop which I'll try to do justice to on a future visit when better equipped and the sun not about to go down. Top right of the pic you can see some of the famous burial caves mentioned in the brief tourist description that follows:

"Cales Coves, 10 kilometres from Alaior, features 91 burial caves.

These caves had been "taken over" by hippies from Spain and other European countries during many years.

Since this necropolis ("city of the dead") is a historical heritage, the caves were finally closed with metal doors.

When leaving the village of Sant Climent, leaving behind Son Vitamina, and following a narrow bumpy country road, you get to one of the strangest sites on Menorca.

The Bronze-age caves are carved into the cliffs looking out to a sheltered bay. Most of them are man-made and had been used since the 9th century before Christ.

Beach

The (nudist) beach only is 80 metres long and 20 metres wide.

It is pebbly and there are no facilities."

I've never seen any nudists on this "beach", though plenty on the flat rocks further along. It would be a very painful experience I think. Most of them seem to prefer the nice soft sand further along the coast.
