John the Baptist Church
With the extension of Eygelshoven as a result of the coal mines Laura and Julia, the old Johannes de Doperkerk (the Little Church) on the church hill became too small and there was a need for a larger church.
In 1920 the construction of the new church started on the design of Alphons Boosten and Jos Ritzen from Maastricht.
In 1922 the new church was completed. Next to the church is a Sacred Heart statue from 1930.
Since 2001 the church has been a national monument.
The marlstone church building is a wide cross-church in expressionist style and consists of a three-barge ship, two transepts, a semi-circular choir and a tower on the southern crossarm. The plinth was executed in Nievelsteiner sandstone, higher parts in Maastricht tufkrijt, red brick and concrete.
A parabolic window is located in the top façade. Both the façade and the side aisles have support bears with round arch windows. The tower has a constricted steeple with overhang with rattles at the bottom of the corners.
The midship has a parabolic barrel vault with belt arches.
