With God on our Side.

For some reason Bob Dylan has been on my mind over the past while. In particular the songs I Pity the Poor immigrant and With God on our Side.

This is a photograph of a detail on the monument to the Hungarian National Anthem, which begins with the words "Isten, áldd meg a magyart - God, bless the Hungarians." Yes, there is such a monument. It is situated in the suburb of Budakeszi. We walked there today through the beautiful hills above Budapest.

The face in the shot is God's and this refers to the fact that in the anthem, a very nice one as anthems go, God is asked to help the people, to protect them, to save them from Osman's raiding warriors and bring prosperity to the land -

There is a long tradition of sculpture in this country and Budapest has countless works depicting famous Hugarians and others. As is nearly always the case with monuments in Hungary, however, this one too caused a bit of a stir.
