Curlew's Cry
Lovely drive in my yellow S2000 down to Burnham-on-Crouch to visit my sister. I stopped at a farm shop on the way as I haven't been able to source horseradish root and thought they might have it. A couple of very polite boys aged around eight to ten offered me mulled wine and mince pies as I waited to be served. They had no horseradish for me but I'm a great believer in children helping out in the family business. The mulled wine was delicious.
My sister had made us lovely celery soup for lunch. We then went for a walk along the sea wall. The tide was high and this lone curlew was standing at the tide line. As we approached it took off calling its evocative plaintiff cry. I enjoyed seeing the brent geese too.
Today's poem is Prayer by Carol Ann Duffy. http://www.fulgura.de/sonett/karussel/original/prayer.htm
I get those unholy prayers, particularly the shipping forecast. The call of a curlew could be one.
