Agassiz Rock

First day off work. I still had to get up and supervise the kids getting ready and out of the house. I noticed fabulous light and mist and figured Blackford Hill might be interesting. I hopped on the bike as soon as Max had left and made it to KB for 8.30. Left my bike and panniers at work and continued to Blackford Hill on foot. By the time I got there it was well misty (see extra) and fairly gloomy. Still nice being out. I was surprised to find some nice fungi. On the way back through the Glen the sun managed to get through the mist as it just popped over the hill. For half a minute the old quarry was glowing. It's amazing how quickly the light changes.

The outcrop in the foreground is Agassiz Rock a very important geological site where the Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz identified the smooth rock surface covered with striae as being of glacial origin. Agassiz came up with the idea of continentwide ice sheets and collected evidence for the past Scottish ice sheet in the 1840. Unfortunately, the rock has been vandalised and the striae are no longer visible. The rock is now a favoured bouldering spot.
