Winter solstice

Another stunning evening sky, at the end of the shortest day. Ahead is what will be the longest night of the year.

Today there has been just 7 hours and 50 minutes of daylight here in the UK. It has marked the point at which the sun shines at its most southern point, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn.

From tomorrow, the days start getting longer again, hooray! We’re still in the depth of winter, but heading towards spring.
