A dark day
I'm thoroughly devastated. Feels like someone has died. The application to stop Ola's removal was refused. I and many others did all we could.
They have decided to send a gay man back to one of the most homophobic countries in the world. Unfathomable! It's like putting a lamb in with the lions.
If nothing else I hope this episode highlights the plight of the many other gay men & women who have to live in fear for their lives and cannot live free as we do in the UK unfortunately Ola now joins them.
Ola called me from the airport he was frightened & said "there going to kill me!" I reassured him as much as I could.
They handcuffed him before the flight & there were four security guards for every detainee.
His brother met him at the airport & the police escorted them home this morning.
I wanted to say a big thank you to the wonderful organisations & people who have fought for Ola's asylum (even if only by signing a petition or writing a letter). Many voices speaking as one as has happened is truly inspiring.
We are very lucky to live in the UK, it's only when things like this happen that you realise how lucky we truly are.
You can't win every battle but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stand up and fight & that good cant come out of the battle.
