US landing barges

When I first saw these wrecks 20 years ago I wondered what they were until on one of them I saw "US Navy" painted on the side. I can only think they were once used in the second world war to bring in soldiers. There were big German bases here in SW France along the coast including submarine bases. The wrecks have deteriorated badly now, there was about eight of them all together.
