Lá na gCrann

National Tree day - trees have been hugged, leaves measured and sorted. In case you're wondering the tree for 2012 is the crab apple.

An excellent pizza was had last night - feta and artichoke - followed by a very unusual and interesting film - Silence. An Irish sound recordist returns to Ireland after living in Germany for 15 years ,with the intention of trying to find somewhere that is silent. He travels to various places- mountain top, bogland, seashore, riverside and records everything he hears. Being Ireland, no matter how remote he is, someone always pops up and offers hospitality or wisdom or both. The noise is of course within himself in the end and the silenc he craves is finally achieved by returning to his, now ruined, family home.
The sound recordist himself was a very enigmatic figure, shrouded in melancholy and almost Messiah-like somehow. It was a remarkable film and absolutely everyone in the audience remained seated, in silence until every credit had finished, and still we seemed reluctant to move. The credits stunned me though, for I had assumed it was a documentary - it wasn't, it was a drama and that seems to have put a totally different slant on things - I feel slightly cheated. Watch it if you can. Details here .
Off out again tonight - this time to supper with friends; a proper catch up will take place tomorrow.
