We are so lucky to have this fabulous model on display in Liverpool Cathedral. It shows how the original plans of Giles Gilbert Scott, would have looked had they been accepted. When GGS entered the competition to design The Cathedral, the main criteria were that the building should have a gothic design. We all agree he certainly achieved that, the second important thing was that there should be a unobstructed view of whoever was conducting the service by circa 2000 people. The original plan, as you can see had twin towers, this meant the inside of both towers needed to be supported by a series of pillars or columns running the full length of the central space. This in turn meant lots of obscured views. Back to the drawing board please Mr Scott. After much head scratching, the decision was made to change to only 1 tower, giving us the well know silhouette on the Liverpool skyline. This one change meant that practically every part of the original plan had to be altered. The Lady Chapel being the only part that remained intact.
I am now lucky enough to be guiding here on both Mondays and Thursdays (8.45am to 1.00pm) always delighted to meet and greet fellow blippers, stop and say hello. (Brian)
