Martin Place

If there IS a centre of the Sydney CBD it is Martin Place. These days, around various of the city's ever present construction sites, hoardings feature historic photographs showing early twentieth or late nineteenth century scenes of the precincts that they are defacing renewing. A little way off behind me is one such from the 1930s, shot from pretty much where I am standing. It is reassuring to note that (apart from the fact that the pedestrian mall was a regular street with traffic back then), most things look identifiably the same ... if you don't count the Christmas tree, of course.

This picture is not the same one that I saw in town but it IS from a similar time period
