While I was in Edinburgh today I needed cash and happened to be near the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland.   Each time I go I marvel at the beautiful architecture of this entrance hall which was originally built as a mansion for Lord Dundas in 1772 with the magnificent banking hall behind added later.
On a day when RBS announced plans to close many of its banks in the near future I was fortunate in having no difficulty getting money.  But this will not be the case for very many people throughout Scotland when communities have no banks at all and the nearest bank could be a two or three hour drive away with no public transport.  The bank says that so much banking is done online yet many places have very poor mobile or broadband coverage so it would be impossible to do so.  The elderly and people with poor health and those with small children or who cannot afford bus fares are very vulnerable and also many businesses who use online banking still need to deposit cash each day.  ATMs are not very common in rural areas and although I do have online banking I still visit the bank to withdraw cash.  Times are changing but the effect on communities especially with fewer post offices too will be devastating
