A day without graduations....
Various other meetings including supporting J with some unravelling messy stuff and a less than satisfactory longlisting meeting.
At the end of the day at the opening of the Scottish Studies new Archive facility. My goodness what a difference from a few years ago.
On to a graduation dinner. Utterly fascinating discussion with Alan Kay the computer scientist who essentially invented the laptop/tablet in the early 1970s. A prize winning student and I were rapt as he took us through Newtonian physics, pipe organ design, the beauty of pure maths, farming revolutions, classical music, engineering, early childhood education and psychology (at that point we discovered we had a shared hero and friend in Jerome Bruner....that was a very special moment)....he said he felt we should all devote time to gaining fluency in different disciplines/skills so that we can think more creatively by drawing on a wider range of analogies. Blimey....
