Steel, Glass and Stone

Railway stations.  Places of home comings, good byes, the start of new adventures, of stress, bustle.  For me Edinburgh Waverley was a place to switch from one train to another.  What might have been a tight connection if my first train was late, but instead everything ran on rails and I had a few minutes to enjoy my surroundings.  The magnificence of engineering, old engineering.  But beyond the 20th century steel and glass, an earlier era of honey coloured stone.  The agile lightweight strength of steel allowing almost un obstructed glass, behind sturdy stone, secure but heavy, limiting window sizes.  Here the light floods in, up in those dark rooms, shadows cast.
