Murmuration

By Murmuration

Well, I never knew that!

The river Tay, which runs through Perth, is prone to flooding and so some years ago the council built various flood defence walls. These are some of the carvings in the wall (there are lots of others) and whilst I was photographing I was amazed to find that perth is twinned with a Perth in Ontario. It is also twinned with lots of other towns too. Who knows why.

The poem is an extract from Perth Poet William Soutar's poem 'Autobiography'

Out of the darkness of the womb
Into a bed, into a room:
Out of a garden into a town,
And to a country, up and down
The earth; the touch of women and men
And back into a garden again:
Into a garden; into a room;
Into a bed and into a tomb;
And the darkness of the world's womb.

Soutar was confined to his bed for much of his adult life as a result of ankylosing spondylitis. More about William Soutar here
