Prince of Wales' armchair, 1860
This chair is a fixture in The Market Gallery at Toronto's historic St. Lawrence Market. The chair was made in 1860 by Jacques & Hay for the Prince's visit to Toronto in that year. The Gallery is located in the old part (1845) of the South Market Building (1902). The market originally occupied a site across the street since 1803 and the lot is now an archeological dig site. In 2012, the South St. Lawrence Market was named by National Geographic Magazine as one of the World's Great Markets. The Gallery opened in 1979 in the space first occupied as Toronto first permanent City Hall and Council Chamber from 1845-1899. More history may be found at its wiki page.
I have visited this gallery for an exhibition once or twice before but I took advantage of the free admission all month (and at various Toronto Museums) to see the current exhibit: Maple Leaf Forever. Mackenzie Financial Investments is footing the bill as their contribution to Canada 150 celebrations (and the firm's 50th).
