The Belfast boy

Another photo which combines new and old. The Scottish Mutual building, a red brick structure which has stood in Belfast for over a century. A footballing legend, who died too young. The need for new, trendy Hotels. All come together to produce the new George Best themed hotel.
George is as much remembered for his "off the ball activities" as his footballing genius. Consider a few quotes from the man himself

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life.

I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.

Says it all, yet omits the many wonderful footballing memories he gave us. I saw him play a few times and he was simply amazing! He played 37 times for Northern Ireland, scoring nine goals. He played for Manchester United for more than 10 years in the 1960s and 1970s. He didn't live to see his 60th birthday, but how much he packed in those 6 decades.
Each room in the hotel will aim to tell a previously unknown story about George Best. I am ambivalent about playing on "the name" or staying in the Miss World suite. I am, however, privileged to say I saw him play and it is that I remember. If the Hotel helps us to celebrate his genius while recognising, but not elevating his demons, I will be happy.
