Living in Manchester

More Granny Stuff.

As yesterday would have been my Mum's 82nd birthday and she is Granny to all three of my boys, today I bring you............

The Carved Box...... and another story.

My Mum was a bit of a Dora (Doreen) the Explorer.

After leaving school at 14 and training as a nurse she worked around the Midlands and after her midwifery training worked as a midwife on the district in Chapeltown (Leeds).
When I read 'Call the Midwife' I thought of my Mum and some of the horrendous/funny/sad/inspiring stories she told us about that time.

As a young woman in the 1950's she set off on her own for Australia and New Zealand. It involved a three week boat trip and we have photo's of her crossing the equator on the ship, skiing on glasiers, bathing in mud springs and all sorts of other exciting stuff.
After a year she came back to England to save up enough to emmigrate and then met my Dad and stayed here.

When #1boy went to Oz last year he was following in his Granny's footsteps.
Obviously she had better taste in souveniers.
This is from New Zealand.

It was always on the hall table at home and if you ever wanted any loose change, safety pins, etc it would be 'in the carved box'

Now it lives on my windowsill and I think of the boy's Granny Power every time I see it.

Love you Mum x
