Flashing in a Church Yard

I don't do much work with a flash at all - all my low light stuff is long exposure & tripod ( or suitable rest ) - so I thought that I might have a go and see if I could learn something ... 

I'm not honestly sure that I am any the wiser, but I have a book on using the Speedlights with Nikons - so perhaps reading it would be a good start...
