Reading lists...

Modelling Scottish buildings, and any others demands a deal of research.  These two books are my main source of information on what to look for, how to scale the models and date the originals.  I also use Pevsner as a provider of historical, architectural information though I have to say I struggle with some of his complexity.

I use Google Earth Street View to scour towns and villages for references and when possible I then visit those places to take photos.  I have been doing this for a number of years taking many before I started modelling Port Appin.  I have a 'shopping list' of buildings to consider.  Only this morning I was looking for some pics of 'death by drowning' gravestones I'd taken in 2001 and I found a pic of the Melvich Hotel complete with crow steps, square offset chimneys, date stone and quite possibly a skew putt or two..  It's been added to the list of things to do.

The models above are based on originals in the Grass Market in Edinburgh, Millport on Gt Cumbrae and Dunoon.
