Snake on a plain

... Well, a moor, actually. Today, went on a local natural history society fungus group foray. Jim, the leader had chosen an excellent location and also arranged for great weather. On top of this, the foray turned into a veritable wildlife autumn feast. We flushed a woodcock out of the bracken soon after setting off, we saw and heard (rutting season in full swing) red deer, found some very fine caterpillars, but the highlight, I think, was very possibly an adder basking by the path. I've known for many years that there were adders at this location, and I've seen them before in other spots, but this is the first time I've seen one here, and one that was amenable to having its photo taken. As we walked on our outward route, it was sprawled out having clearly just devoured some unfortunate beastie, but when we returned, it was curled up snoozing in the afternoon sunshine.
Did I mention we also found some beautiful waxcaps?
