R for Railway - Mt Victoria

Mount Victoria railway station is located on the Main Western line in New South Wales, serving the Blue Mountains town of Mount Victoria.  Opening in 1869, it was the western terminus in the early years.  The steep slope of the Victoria Pass, just to the west, defeated the engineering of the time.  


It was an important station right through into the 1940s, serving the tourist trains for Jenolan Caves and as the terminus for Blue Mountains commuter trains.  The Refreshment Rooms featured a formal dining room and bedrooms for overnight stays.


I understand the stations buildings are unusually ornate inside, but they're closed these days, except for occasional open days.  I chose this shot because I like the way the station nestles down in a cutting.
