Over The Bar With His Board, Hastings
It was one of those autumnal days where the light is so sharp it's as if it has ben cut with a knife, so, of course, it meant I had to head down to the seaside. This time it was a trip to Hastings with my brother.
Now one of the laws of the British seaside that I seem to always forget is that on a Monday half of any coastal town will be shut and if it has an art gallery (in this case the Jerwood) it will ALWAYS be closed! So, instead, we went to see the newly re-opened pier which has been resurrected after a terrible fire that more or less destroyed most of it a few years ago. Instead of rebuilding it exactly as before they decided to do something different - it is now this wide, stark, very minimal but strikingly beautiful expanse of reclaimed wood. The panoramic uninterrupted views are stunning and it rightly won the Stirling Prize for architecture for 2017.
My second extra shot for today is a close up of one of the very distinctive benches on the pier itself.
