Tachigi-Bori

Masa Suzuki's 2013 carving of a Sika Deer in the trunk of a living Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) in the grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Wakehurst Place, Sussex.

In this work, Masa Suzuki applies the Japanese art of standing wood carving, Tachigi-Bori, to the stem of a tree that was originally damaged in the Great Storm of 1987.

Today's 'Extra' gives a bit more context to the carving of this living tree.
