How to wear a baby

Most babies in Otavalo are carried on their mother's back, tied on with a large triangle of (usually white) cloth. The method is simple and effective - once you get the kid balanced on your back, the ends of the cloth cross over your chest and are tied together under baby's bottom. For very young babies, it's more of a 'pouch' arrangement, but still the same principle. Larger children even than this one are carried this way and they all seem quite content. In a week, we saw hundreds of babies, but only four in strollers or prams.

(How you get the kid balanced on your back in the first place, I know not, but there you go.)
