California Light

People in California take the beautiful light for granted. The light in Michigan this time of year has an underwater-grey, bleak cast.  Sidewalks are dreary wet with matted dead leaves. Here in LA, The sun welcomes itself into every season with lemony flecked speckles of light that slide and revolve throughout the day. It casts patches of diffuse swirls onto the hard surfaces giving them the impression of a shimmering sea, and it makes all surrounding colors and shadows just pop.

Californians so take light for granted that when they even say the word “light” it is only as an adjective to describe traffic.  And it's barely ever true.  “Traffic’s light and I’m only 20-minutes away.”  (30 minutes just sounds way too far, and 15 minutes is unrealistic.)  So we know that 20 minutes away really means something closer to 40, and that light traffic is never something you can depend on.
