Smoke Signals

The locals are restless. There's a lot of smoke signalling going on at the moment. There's a feeling in the air that something's about to go off.

I carried the idea out of childhood that smoke signals were used by tribes of North American Indians, like a kind of Morse Code, to hold conversations with each other. I think that was a little fanciful now I come to think about it.
