inspired by cast iron
We spent the day travelling leisurely on buses, boats and trains. The boat took us to Lakeside where caught a steam train to Haverthwaite. Plenty of time to pause for a home made scone and stroll round the yards where steam engines were lovingly being restored. Great sheets of iron cast and honed into shape then riveted and bolted into position. This buffer had been cleaned and greased in preparation for its allotted task.
My Great Grandad was a boiler maker in the Derby works. I wonder how many rivets and bolts he fixed in his lifetime?
