7:00 am: I'm out here in half jammies and winter coat to witness the raising of the rafters next door. I'm taking my role as documenter of the neighbors' remodel very seriously. They're not even here to see it. Because of the water damage to their house, they're in an apartment downtown, probably still snoozing. It's flipping cold; just above freezing and still half dark. The entire process takes less than half an hour. Impressed.

Wind is whipping. Neighborhood party/grill has been postponed because of the arctic weather. What will I do now with the ingredients for Asian cabbage slaw for 25 people? Do squirrels like cabbage?
