Fleet Street, Beaverbrook and DS

What a day. After a morning driving an exotic supercar made by McLaren, this afternoon’s destination was a fabulous new luxury hotel in what used to be the home of media magnate Lord Beaverbrook.

The reason for being here is the closure of a journalists’ association I have been involved with for a long time, the Fleet Street Motoring Group. Founded in 1981, and comprising the motoring editors of national newspapers, its time has come to an end.

A wake for the group has been hosted tonight by luxury car company DS Automobiles, and we had a briefing on their plans for the brand in the private cinema where Beaverbrook and Churchill used to sit and watch Pathé News during the war.

This was the sight that greeted me on arrival via the very long driveway through the 400-acre Beaverbrook estate: a house aglow with light and framed by a vibrant sunset. Memorable.
