Unknown garage spider

This photo is a backblip from last night (Thursday), when I was too busy stripping wallpaper.

My garage is practically held together by the webs of this species of spider. I'm afraid I don't know which species it is. It has unusual legs - the upper half looks fairly smooth and the lower/outer half is quite bristly. The outer edges of my garage are covered with the spiders and their webs. I know a guy who can probably identify them from photos and, if so, I'll edit this to add in the name. When I see spiders close up like this, I'm always glad they aren't the size of a cow, or even a dog. Potential stuff of nightmares!
