RNLI
Today I had a behind the scenes tour of Newhaven lifeboat which covers the area from Brighton to Beachy Head. Founded in 1803 the Newhaven Lifeboat Station is amongst the oldest in the country and older than the RNLI itself. In 1800 H.M.S Brazen was wrecked in a storm off the cliffs just west of Newhaven with the loss of all but one of her 105 crew. It was this tragedy that apparently inspired a local committee to look into the provision of a lifeboat.
