The winged skull
Death smiles at us all, but all a man can do is smile back.
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Roman emperor from 161 to 180
Another Gothic offering, it being very close to All Hallows Eve.
Old Scottish gravestones are often carved with symbols reminding us of our certain mortality and possible immortality. This winged skull represents both; the skull reminding us of death while the wings represent the soul leaving the body at the resurrection.
