Chocolate Box Scene

Chocolate Box picture scene
forming a picture serene
Gentle dawn-lit cloud
Hang atop a land once proud
Populated by scattered croft
Surveyed by eagle high aloft
Fox and badger beneath stroll
Continuing their historical role
Of farmer's dark nemesis
who daily plots their demise
With smoking gun and bloodied hands
He patrols these disturbed lands
Looking for another one to blame
Wildlife, stranger, all the same
None might disturb his reverie
All are guilty, all save he
Creatures are there for his sport
His favourite sound, his gun's retort
The cry of curlew, eagle's scream
For him, nightmare, others, a dream
Poison, trap, lure and gun
He'll not see his work undone
By outsiders who don't understand
All must be eradicated, vilified, damned
He must be given ultimate power
Over everything his ego must tower
He is lord and master of this place
His sovereignty of hereditory trace
Ruling with balled, iron fist
Nothing that can be eradicated is missed
Wildlife, wildflower, all is tythed
Amazing that anything has survived
This rural idyll, his plan obscene
Hidden within this chocolate box scene
