Just Finished

Greg James is a Fremantle Sculpter who has produced some truly wonderful works reflecting the early history of Fremantle.

As I walked around the port this morning this new work had just been completed and was heading for its resting place in Fremantle.

The Studios are in an old Bond Store which house his studio, a prominent Fremantle photographer and a local Furniture maker.

The mast and rigging in the background is on top of the Old Fremantle Gaol which overlooks the harbour.

The flags were different signals to ship in port whilst the black ball was a device used to convey the 12 noon time to ships in Port.

As the ball left the top of its mark and hit the bottom is was exactly 12 noon. This was used in conjunction with the 12 oclock gun, but served as a visable sign for those who were out of hearing range of the gun.

Some say this is one of the origins of the saying...keep your eye on the ball....maybe this is true or not, but it sounds good anyway for those disbelievers.
